The Commission for Scientific Diving in Germany (KFT) is the central point of contact for all matters related to professional scientific diving in Germany. It is a registered professional association of German research institutions that conduct scientific diving in accordance with current national regulations. Its members include universities, non‑university research institutions and companies employing certified research divers, as well as recognized training organisations, the DGUV examination board for scientific divers and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The KFT develops and coordinates scientific diving in Germany and represents the scientific and logistical interests of diver‑assisted aquatic research at the national and international level. As a member of the European Scientific Diving Panel (ESDP) within the Network of Marine Research Institutes and Stations, it represents German interests in professional scientific diving in Europe.
Key responsibilities of the KFT include:
- Continuous improvement of safety regulations for scientific diving in cooperation with the relevant authorities.
- Methodological development and assurance of a high scientific standard in scientific diving.
- Development of training curricula for scientific diving in Germany.
- Advising universities and institutions without their own research divers on the implementation of scientific projects involving diving operations.
KFT is thus the central point of contact for all questions relating to professional scientific diving in Germany. The main objective of the Commission is to support German scientists in the implementation of safe and scientifically excellent diving projects in Germany and abroad.
KFT is a professional association registered at the Bremerhaven Local Court. Prof. Dr. P. Fischer (chairman), Dr. M. Schmid (deputy chairman), Stephanie Häberle (Deputy chairman), Dipl. Biol. F.
